1.0 out of 5 stars Endless problems, January 22, 2012
This review is from: First Alert/Jarden SC7010BV Talking Smoke And Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Misc.)
I bought an old multi family house and in order for the sale to go through, the owner had to upgrade the whole house and he used First Alert 7010B and SC7010BV throughout all the units. The main unit, where I live had 14. They were all installed shortly before the sale of the house, so when we moved in they were just a couple months old. Within a month we started having problems. They would go off (all 14) blaringly loud in the middle of the night and I would race around trying to figure out which one it was. Time after time, I would call up, get the same advice (check batteries, vacuum or blow out with air, unhook suspected unit, see if it goes off by itself, if so it is defective and you can get a free replacement). I replaced several. After the first year warrantee was up, I had to pay for shipping ($3.50 each?). This went on for years. I probably replaced 10 of the units, some more than once (most were SC7010BV). You could tell they were getting annoyed with me when I... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars false alarms, September 19, 2011

Had 4 of these units installed and over two years we've had about 10 false alarms (mainly in the middle of the night) that have trained my kids to stop paying attention to alarms. Voice function and lights have not worked consistently to identify faulty unit(s). I'm now starting to replace them one at a time in hopes of ending nocternal panics for no reason.

Based on a single installation involving this item in a complex system on two wired interlinked zones with a wireless interlinking bridge between zones (see First Alert's OneLink line), I recommend this product.

The best feature of this product is that it is a rare smoke/CO combination detector whose smoke detection technology is the vastly-superior PHOTOELECTRIC type. Although photoelectric technology is becoming more common on smoke-only detectors, very few smoke/CO combination detectors use photoelectric technology.

Although the research seems to have been quashed in the United States, New Zealand fire safety officials have identified the shortcomings of the more common, ionization type detectors as a major life safety hazard due to their under-performance in the most common type of incipient fire situations: smoldering furniture. Ionization detection technology is great for making a racket when you burn your toast, but may sense nothing, even enclosed in an... Read more
