The BRK hardwire carbon monoxide detects dangerous CO gas and allows you peace of mind with its battery backup. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, deadly gas. It can be emitted by sources including gas or oil furnaces, gas clothes dryers, water heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, charcoal grills, gas ranges, and space heaters. A clogged chimney, improper venting, and attached garages can also cause carbon monoxide accumulation. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), at least one CO alarm should be installed near a home's sleeping area. This alarm's digital display with peak memory remembers and displays the highest CO levels detected.
The BRK CO5120PDBN hardwire CO alarm with battery backup and digital display includes these features:

Rather than having defined screw holes, there are a series of conjoined slots. These slots must be tightened significantly in order to securely mount the base. Unfortunately, the bracket is poorly designed where as the torque applied when tightening one box screw will dislodge the other screw. I would have preferred that the description included the year in which it was manufactured, so I knew that ahead of time. I know that you need to replace these every 10 years, so this one is now only good for seven years. However, the price was still worth it. Other than that, it appears to never have been used with the original battery and battery protection shield.I have a hard wire system by BRK, but I did have to swap out the plastic base -- but no electrical work needed. It took less than 3 minutes to replace a single fire alarm unit (without the CO detector). One note, BRK requires you to use only BRK/First Alert alarms. Don't mix with other hardware alarms. We learned the hard way, by having the alarms chirp during the night - not fun. I did have one of these already, and it has worked out great. I found that by trimming the foam insulation away from the tab slots with a utility knife, the tabs could properly engage, making the unit much easier to install. I have seen other reviewers comment on the difficulty of re-installing the unit to the base. I think my suggestion may be a solution to that problem. |
