I wanted to put one downstairs and then upstairs within 30 feet. I know the instructions say that building structures can cause a problem with it, but it really does not work well at all in the one case that I am using it for which is my small church. I moved around to different locations throughout the building seeing if setting off one would set off the next, but it did not work in most cases. It almost has to be line of sight. Originally, I was only going to need two, but after the line of sight problem, I had to change it to four and then added a combination smoke/Carbon Dioxide talking alarm.

Purchased two smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and two smoke-only detectors for different areas of the house. Units function as advertised but found to have what I consider to be very limited range.

Setup was simple, and everything worked perfectly during short range tests. However, when units were placed 25' apart with a single wood stud/drywall wall between them they wouldn't communicate. Tried to relocate slightly in case I was getting interference from wiring in the wall, but no luck. Also tried different units in different positions/orientations in case transmission was direction or there were variations in signal strength between units. No luck.

FirstAlert customer service was friendly but had no real solution other than to reorient or reposition the detectors. They said the expected range is about 30'. Not for me.

I have 4 of these smoke detectors installed in my cape cod home and it makes me feel safe. When one goes off, they all go off and the voice says whether there is smoke or CO2 in the house. ONCE they went off when there was smoke in the kitchen. The rest of the time they go off, mostly in the middle of the night for some mysterious reason, saying, in a VERY loud man's voice, "Change the batteries in the Kitchen smoke detector" or "Change the batteries in the hallway smoke detector" etc etc. I currently have two of them lying on the floor with the battery drawers pulled out which stops the voice and the beep--beep--beep letting me know the batteries, installed maybe 2 or 3 or 4 weeks before, are used up. The detectors are still lying on the floor days later because if I install new batteries then I will be woken up ever sooner by those batteries wearing out. I purchased the SC-1000 system several months ago. It was very straightforward to set up. I use it in silent mode as the siren cannot be heard outside of the house. I disabled the siren manually. If the system is triggered the first sound you hear is the dialer repeating the emergency message I have recorded. This prevents a burglar from finding the unit and ripping out the phone cord. So by the time they hear the message, it's too late.

I live alone on the edge of Detroit and have it set up to dial my cell phone if triggered. I have been in "test" mode as I have a cat and didn't want to call the police with a false alarm; no false alarms for three months.

Earlier this week the system called me with an alarm. I work 40 minutes from home and decided to check it out as a possible false alarm. It wasn't. We purchased this because we basically wanted something for our French door. My husband is very careful about making sure all the doors are dead-bolted at night, but the French doors seem awful easy to kick in if you really wanted to. Additionally, we have a couple teenagers, and we sleep on a different floor than they do. We don't want anyone sneaking out at night. ;) So, we purchased this system to cover a couple windows and the French door, and to allow us to sleep a little easier. I usually have no problem with anything technical - in fact, I love pushing buttons! But for some reason I was very nervous about setting this up. We are currently under contract to one of those home monitoring companies and are looking to get something on our own and out of their contract. We had hoped this would be the one.

Unfortunately we had a number of times when the alarm would go off for no reason. I don't need false alarms to drag me home from work or create unnecessary panic. We made adjustments and did some trouble shooting, but the phantom alarms continued.

Installing the unit is very easy and the instructions are clearcut to use. But when we called the company to ask questions about the product, we only received one call back (when we were not home), and after we returned the call, we never heard back from them again. Perhaps it was just some glitch or miscommunication. But we've decided to continue looking until we find the right match.

First of all, I use Kidde smoke detectors and like them very much. I decided to order packages of the Universal Smoke Alarm Adapters, along with the five detectors, as they weren't too expensive, and I'm getting lazy in old age. What wasn't clear from the marketing description is that the package of two adapters includes one for one kind of alarm and the other for a completely different alarm. And, unless you coincidentally have those two types of alarms in your home, you'll use one and throw the other away. This is stupid stuff. Since you likely have only one style of detector/alarm in your home (I had some old BRK models), why not package two each of the same adapter? In my case I bought three packages, thinking somehow I'd end up with six usable adapters, five of which I needed for my new Kidde alarms, but, instead, had two too few and had to throw three away.

I thought I needed these when my existing smoke alarm broke. I ordered a Kidde i4618 to connect to my existing house Firex wiring. I thought I needed this adaptor to connect to the existing wiring. You can use this adapter if you want. If you know a little about house wiring and know how to turn off your electrical breakers, you can skip this. The i4618 comes with a wiring harness. Turn off power to the existing detectors. Remove the existing smoke detector harness and connect the new one that is included with the i4618. Plugin the new detector. Turn on power.

There, I saved you some money.

I agree it's weird to bundle 2 different adapters. But with free shipping from Amazon it's cheaper to buy this 2 pack and throw the other one away than order a single adapter elsewhere and pay shipping.

And it's true you don't have to buy these if you want to go to the hassle of finding the right circuit breaker your smoke detectors are wired to (and in the process perahps killing power to lots of other things in the house that will need their clocks reset, ruining that show your Tivo was recording, etc.), running the batteries down in all the other smoke detectors on the circuit while you're doing the re-wiring, etc. This adapter makes it really fast and easy and you can leave the power on.

I used the KA-F to replace old Firex detectors that liked to go off randomly at 2AM and it works great. And the Firex and Kidde detectors network together just fine.
